A poem.

I wrote this poem about my first girlfriend a few months ago. I don’t really express my feelings alot, but…yeah. Here it is:

I didn’t choose to be gay anymore than I chose to be black.

I have been through a shitload. Love for me is not simply a four letter word that entitles every other song, poem, movie, play, monologue…it is something that was at one point a vast void, a ruthless pool of writhing pain that has been tranformed into…a light. A genuine smile, a warm embrace, a nervous laugh…a Kiss.

All of this confusion with the word “Love” leaves me wondering if I have indeed found what every hopeless romantic spends their waking breath searching for…but what I feel is not Cliché. What I feel is Real. Can it be so? Can a girl really love another girl? They tell me it is disgusting, they tell me it is blasphemy. But how can something that feels so right be wrong? How can they tell me that this wonderful feeling I get when I think of you, this overwhelming desire to at least hold your hand or tuck your hair behind your ear is…sin? I cannot even sleep because I am afraid that if I close my eyes I will awake and my baby will have gone, disappeared. Disappeared into the abyss that holds this society against us. But I refuse to let them anchor us down with their heavy weights of denial, fear, shame…regret.

I refuse.

I refuse.

I refuse.

Because though I may have denied being gay, may have feared what people would have thought of me, may have been ashamed of having explicit fantasies of a woman’s skin touching another; never have I regreted pressing my lips against yours, holding your body close to mine, whispering those Clichéd words “I Love You” into your ear; because

What I feel is not Cliché. What I feel is Real.
